Dominos

The game of dominos, originally made from bone or ivory, appeared in China in the 13th century under the name “pupai” before becoming commonly played in Parisian cafés in the 18th century. Dominos are particularly popular in Latin America and the Caribbean. The record for a cascading domino toppling was set in 2009 during Domino Day, an event held in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, with 4,491,863 dominos fallen out of 4,800,000 set up. Domino is also the name of a small village on the island of Oléron (Charente-Maritime), located at the top of the large dune (“domine de haut,” which became “Domino”) and has been popular with tourists since the 1920s.
